Nickel Plating (Electrolytic)
Bright, polishable nickel for decorative protection and contact underlayers.
Process specifications
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Process group | Plating |
| Coating thickness | 5–50 µm |
| Tolerance impact | Uneven build-up: current density concentrates at edges and corners and starves recesses — thickness can vary 3:1 across one part. Avoid on toleranced fits and bores; use electroless nickel where uniformity matters. |
| Corrosion rating | 96–500 h salt spray depending on thickness and underlayers; barrier protection only — scratches expose the substrate. |
| Appearance | Bright silver with a faint warm yellow cast; can be buffed to near-mirror. |
⚠ Not suitable for
Precision toleranced features and deep bores (uneven deposition — choose electroless nickel); skin-contact consumer products in some markets (nickel allergy regulations, e.g. EU REACH); hardened steels without post-plate hydrogen-embrittlement bake.
