Choose it when

The default for high-volume blanking and forming tooling: massive chromium carbides grind away abrasion for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Rough-machine annealed, harden, finish by EDM/grinding.

Look elsewhere when

Toughness is only moderate — shock-loaded edges chip; choose A2 (or S7) for interrupted or impact duty. Semi-stainless at best: store oiled or coated in humid climates.

Typical applications

  • Blanking and piercing punches
  • Forming and coining dies
  • Shear blades and slitting knives
  • Wear plates and gibs
